Hello everyone!
Welcome to my blog. I thought for October since it's a spooky Halloween month I'd do a little feature for the blog called Meet My Monsters. I'm going to interview my evil characters just for you! And maybe someone will find it interesting, if not I have material I can use against them later.
Since my beastly demon boy Glaice's book re-released right before October I'll drag him in here first. If you don't know Glaice is the main point of view character and antagonist of my book Restless Dreams of Darkness.
This stunning cover by Anna at Eerilyfair Designs captures him perfectly, exactly how I envision him to be. He's a humanoid demon with claws, wings, horns, goat legs/hooves, and a long spaded tail. He was based loosely on incubus legend and this book was born from a fallen incubus/succubus type society. My goal with this book was to create a vile villain character that was alien to us but still stirred enough human emotion that you could sympathize and even care about his cause. Whether I succeeded in that or not you'd have to read the book and tell me but there is no mistaking he is a nasty beast and his book is violent and dark.
So let's see if I can get him to answer some questions for me shall we? After researching online for hours looking for character interview questions I have come to the conclusion they all assume one thing: Your character is human. Since mine is a demon and alien to human concepts I've tried to adapt some questions to work.
----
So, why don't you tell us your name?
Glaice: "I am Glaice, consort of The Queen, First among Brothers. Some call me The Betrayer. They don't often live long."
Can you elaborate on those things for us? Tell us what that means.
Glaice: "The Queen is the goddess of our people. Our ruler. Her rule is absolute. To defy Her is death. I am Her chosen mate for creating spawn. I am the only Brother who holds this position. I am also the most talented at hunting the other Brothers so I am often sent to hunt them for Her. They can't hide from me. Those are the ones that call me the Betrayer. I suppose they expect me to betray my Queen for solidarity with my Brothers."
Tell us about your world.
Glaice: "The mortals call it Espyn. We don't have a name for it. We live in the bowels of the world. The mortals have the lush land above, we live deep in the caves. An ancient desert full of ruins exists there. That is where the Queen's temple is, among the ruins. We Brothers all have a personal den, a cave of our own. The Queen and her Sisters live inside the temple. We travel to the surface world to hunt the mortals. They're our food. If the mortals were left unchecked they would spoil and ruin our world. We are the ones that hold them in check."
You don't look like the other Brothers do you? Explain why.
Glaice: "I was the only Brother born with white skin and hair and sky-colored eyes. My spawn inherit these traits so it is easy to tell which are mine. I am of the old blood, before it was diluted by breeding too much with mortals. I am bigger, faster, stronger, than most of the Brothers that exist now."
You said the mortals are your food?
Glaice: "Yes. We harvest mortals like mortal farmers harvest crops. We feed on their emotions, lust and fear mostly. We don't kill them and eat them often. We use them to birth new spawn because there is something wrong with our people. I am one of the only Brothers still capable of creating spawn with a Sister. The others have to mate with the mortals. Unless a raid goes badly. They're confusing and violent creatures. They don't understand our ways and try to kill us. Then we have to fight back. "
You are pretty violent yourself, Glaice. Do you enjoy killing?
Glaice: "I enjoy hunting. The thrill of the hunt and taking down prey. Death is a side effect not the goal. Unless someone has crossed me. Then yes, I enjoy taking my vengeance. I take a great deal of pleasure from revenge."
Are you in love with anyone? Love is a pretty standard topic for mortals.
Glaice: "That feeling that makes one feel all warm and safe? I have felt it in others. It is confusing to me. It is not something that is allowed in my society. If you ask my mates they would probably tell you that I love them. I don't think I do. I want to protect them but it is because they are mine and I enjoy them."
Who are you closest to? Do you trust anyone?
Glaice: "Sanskir. I trust him. He is magically bound to me. He can't betray me. Is it close like a mortal would describe? That I am not sure. We have fun together. We hunt, we mate. I tolerate him in a way I don't tolerate any other Brothers because we are bound."
What about your mate, The Queen?
Glaice: "To trust the Queen is to die. To live to please Her is to live. To defy Her is death. Quite honestly I don't enjoy mating with Her either. She was beautiful once but now She is monstrous with an appetite for Brother hearts. I would never trust Her. I am Her mate because She has chosen it, not because I would choose to be so. Except for perhaps the benefits of the position I enjoy such as the freedom not given to other Brothers."
What are you most proud of?
Glaice: "My spawn. I have the most powerful and beautiful spawn. They are strong, smart, crafty, blood-thirsty, powerful."
What is your greatest desire? What would make you happy?
Glaice: "To live life as I see fit. To have the mates I want. To have my spawn. To be recognized for my power."
What is your greatest fear?
Glaice: "I fear nothing. Fear is a prey emotion. I am the hunter not the prey."
What is your greatest regret?
Glaice: "I don't believe in regrets. Although, at times I wonder what would have happened between Sanskir and I if I hadn't bound him to me. Would he still care for me the way he does? Perhaps he is in love. He seems blinded to my flaws and claims to see things in me that do not exist. I know myself, I know they are not there. I would not want to lose him though. We are at odds at times but he is still the only one I trust."
Tell us about Talent?
Glaice: "Talent? Is that not a spoiler for the book? Talent is a mortal the Sisters captured to breed with for spawning until they broke him. He is different than other mortals. He does not fear me. He tried to talk to me. He was the only mortal that has ever tried to understand the situation and my kind. He intrigues me because he is different. I think he is a broken mortal but that makes him interesting. Most mortals are like mindless cattle that only care for their own lives and people."
Well thank you for answering some questions for us, Glaice. I have to go get ready for the day job--
Glaice: "Can I comment on that? You need a new job. Like writing more books about me."
Then get busy selling this one!
Until next time, friends. Thanks for joining me in my little crazy corner of my mind where my characters exist.
